Guitar player: JP’s Warung in Seminyak Bali
Sitting in an empty JP’s Warung last night, I was joined at my table by a guy from Sumba. Alfonsus, was part of a duo playing that night and we chatted about the music scene in Bali. I told him for me, watching live music is a magical experience, especially when a musician or group really hits a song I like.
Alfonsus said he learned to play guitar by hanging around a friend when he was young who owned a guitar. His friend would allow him to practice, when he put the instrument down. He told me Indonesian musicians have a very relaxed attitude to music. He had no idea how to tune a guitar for the first year. “If I am having fun on stage I don’t care about the time, I will stay a long time.” he said.
He was joined by a guy from South Sulawesi, who was a ripping lead guitarist. “Maybe we can play together sometime.” said Alfonsus. “That’s funny.” I said, “I have trouble with all the basics.” “Well we can get together anytime.” he said “As long as there is beer.” I think that sounds like a good deal, music lesson and beer. I think learning from this guy will work, as he is very laid back and can play. Alfonsus and his friend play every Sunday night at JP’s Warung. They are part of a quartet who play somewhere else also. Alfonsus showed the guitar he was suing to play rhythm guitar. He’s had it for 15 years and bought it in Matahari department store. JP’s Warung is located on Jl. Dhyana Pura in Seminyak. There is live music 7 nights a week starting at 9pm. JP’s is ideal for small groups and couples. Music can get loud and th place is packed on Friday / Saturday nights.
