Legian is the village located directly north of Kuta along Jl. Legian. The term ‘village’ might sounds rather strange these days as Tuban, Kuta, Legian and Seminyak seem like one long urban sprawl, cement and tarmac more prevalent that thach houses and coconut groves. Back in the 1980’s Legian was a totally separate village from Kuta and in the latter part of that decade started to be ‘the place’ for expats. The famous Goa Cafe, located on Jl. Legian and Jl. Double Six was home base for many foreigners living in Bali, before the age of internet and cell phones.

Pura Desa Legian, the village temple is located on Jl. Legian, up from Jl. Padma. As in the Kuta area, lanes leading from Jl. Legian to the beach became packed with affordable accommodation, bars, restaurants and shops. These days the Legian area is a center for family groups looking for an affordable place to stay close to the beach. Seminyak has replaced Legian as ‘the place’ for expats, but its location, only 15-20 minutes from the airport mean Legian will be remain valuable real estate for years to come.

The most expensive places to stay in the Legian area are along the beach. These hotels tend to be large, modern and feature swimming pools set close to the beach.

Senen Beach Inn

Located about 25 meters from Jalan Melasti and close to the Rosani Hotel. 16 rooms on 1 level. You walk down a short driveway to find a basic bungalow style guest house. This place is made for a traveler on a budget or a surfer wanting close access to the beach at Pantai Kuta and Jalan Melasti. Rooms are simple with fan, white tile floor and very little in the way of decoration. Some of the bathrooms are open air which could be a blessing or a pain depending on the amount of mosquitoes around. Wall shower with cold water.

A modern fun looking place, with tall blocks of rooms around a central pool. Noise could be an issue if relaxing by the pool is high on your list. All rooms with AC / hot water. Located on Jl. Pura Bagus Teruna (Rum Jungle Rd.) halfway between Jl. Legian and Hotel Jayakarta. From the airport it will take you 15-20 minutes depending on traffic. Kuta is a 5 minutes taxi ride south as is Seminyak to the north. The beach is a 5 minute walk.

The grounds are massive and maze-like, with many small bungalows and a pool. Huge collection of rooms set in a site that extends all the way from just Jl. Legian to Jl. Padma Utara, which is 200 meters from the beach. Bungalows are large and there is a choice of fan or AC rooms. There is a pool and restaurant.

•Luxury accommodation in Legian:

The beach-side hotels in Legian are not actually on the beach, but have a 10 meter wide road / path separating them from the beach. This is actually not a problem and might be considered as a bonus. Cars do not generally use this road and it makes walking up to Blue Ocean Beach way easier.

The scene on the Legian beaches is fun, although a less intense version of Kuta Beach. There are strolling vendors, drink stations and paces to get a massage.

Large hotel with 3 swimming pools. The Jayakarta is a a spacious 4-star hotel located on the beach in Legian. It affords access to the shoopping areas of Kuta without actually being in them iddle of it as well as the nightlife of Jalan Dhyana Pura. The Jayakarta is only 15-20 minutes from the airport and is a spacious place to relax.
