Inul Daratista to appear at Kuta Karnival 2007
Indonesian dangdut temptress Inul Daratista will appear in person on the closing day of Kuta Karnival 2007. Inul is a Javanese dancer who gained fame in 2003 for creating her own suggestive dance style of the Javanese traditional dangdut music.
Inul has a face like a rottweiler and a backside like Liz Taylor, but that didn’t stop her creating a storm among the more conservative elements of Indonesian Muslim society. Indonesia runs a strange middle line between skanky and religious, the two often conveniently avoiding each other. Dangdut music sounds like some kind of Middle Eastern village music, which has morphed into something Indonesians (but not westerners) appreciate). A flick through the local TV channels can reveal 2 or even 3 dangdut shows, complete with nasty music, adoring audiences, sexy singers and plenty of traditionally clad Muslims in attendance.
My father-in-law enjoys dangdut as do many Indonesians. Inul simply put in a little extra effort to get everyone’s attention. Let’s hope she puts it out for the Kuta Karnival.
