SuperSize my nasi goreng
Since writing my article on fast food I have watched a movie called SuperSize Me. It was somewhat of a coincidence, I was out with a friend, we picked up a few ‘competitively priced DVD’s’ (not saying they’re pirated, not saying they’re not, just saying they cost a $1). SuperSize Me is a documentary about a guy named Morgan Spurlock who eats nothing but McDonalds food for 30 days. His health is monitored by 4 doctors, using EKG, blood test, scales and other medical monitoring devices.
I tell you I felt sick watching this. The guys health goes down the tubes and his cholesterol / liver function heads into the dangerous zone. You could argue that going to a bar everyday and drinking 10 shots of whiskey would also hurt your health as would most extreme behavior, but the thought I had while watching this was, even if you wanted to eat healthy at McDonalds, where do you turn?
Total wake up call for western civilization, you are what you eat. I don’t blame McDonalds in particular, above anyone else, the whole ‘mega-food industry’ is one big marketing-distribution machine. Add that to a change in personal habits (internet, Playstation, DVD’s, drivethru) instead of traditional pursuits (walking, playing sports, visiting friends) and you’ve got a time bomb. Here in Bali I do not see many obese locals. I do see locals who started out as fit 22 years olds, packing an extra few pounds by the time they are 25, largely due to no exercise. Still rice and chicken have to be better for you grease in a bun.
Reckon I’m going to hit a cleansing diet for a couple of days, to rid my mind of the sight of that guy munching down cheese burgers.
