Sol Legian : Sunglasses in Legian Bali
Sunglasses are a no brainer for most tourists visiting Bali. For my first 3 years in Bali I did not wear sun glasses, as I used to wear regular glasses. After getting my eyes fixed, I no sport a pair of Nike polarizing glasses, and man do I notice the difference! The sun and ultra violet are strong here, as we are just 8 degrees off of the equator. I used to squint on bright cloudy days and got used to it. Not any more, my good glasses give my eyes a break. Strangley most Balinese do not wear sunglasses and that accounts for the high incidence of cataracts.
Walking along Jl. Legian yesterday afternoon, several people approached me offering fake Oakley sunglasses for 50,000rp. Never buy a cheap pair of sunglasses. There is a reason proper sunglasses cost money, part of the reason is marketing, the other part is they work. Cheap sunglasses may not be UV protectant, and will damage your eyes, mote than if you were not wearing them.
One of the places you can pick up a real pair of sunglasses is Sol Legian, located close to Mama’s German Restaurant on Jl. Legian. The 2 staff gave me some info on the type of glasses sold and the prices. Virtually all the brands are imported and the price reflects that. Brands include Calvin Klein, Ray Ban, Oakley, Iceberg. Prices range from 100,000rp – 2,900,000rp. There are sometimes special offer. Still, you only have one set of eyes. Sol Legian is open from 9am – 10pm.
