Shopping for tech gear in Singapore

Singapore is the place most expats in Bali will look to when they need tech gear, new camera, laptop, etc. Today I was looking around for a portable surge protector, one that actually works. On the 4th floor of Sim Lim Plaza, I visited one shop loaded with gadgets, bits and pieces, add-ons, upgrades etc.

I found travel plugs that would fit my laptop with no surge protection, and surge protectors of all kinds, but not one that would totally work with my machine. You can pick up a decent surge protector for $25 Sing (US$16).

I did pick up a cheap Canon camera for $340 Sing (US$217), including case and 1GB chip. The guys I bought from were on the ground floor, they were definitely ‘salesmen’, by which I mean ‘able to work the margins’ as there are no prices, but I did negotiate and feel happy. I asked if they were making money and they said no, as everyone was selling the same stuff. Basically a hi-tech version of the Kuta handicraft vendors. The guy said he does make money from automobile sound gear though.

In Singapore they charge 5% sales tax, which you can claim back at the airport. I recieved a form to fill out and along with my receipt, should be able to get my $17 Sing back. At the shop I disgarded the wrapping and sales nonsense. Arriving in Bali with new gear means you pay extra.
