Kerobokan jail: A tough hole to climb out of
Talking recently with an expat who has been living in Bali for years, we got on the subject of Kerobokan jail. He asked me about Schapelle Corby and I said she really blew her chances, by not going for a ‘solution’ early on. He told me about a foreign guy who was caught for hash and ended up in Kerobokan.
According to this guy, the fellow was probably set up by another expat, who himself had been caught doing something naughty. His girlfriend sought ‘solutions’ at various levels with the Bali police and court. All of the offers were accepted…but he still got 7 years in jail. The point is that everyone will tell you they can help, from the lawyers, to the cops to the court. It proved costly for this particular fellow, and the only way he got out was having his girlfriend seek a higher authority in Jakarta. A really big solution!
Tricky stuff, who to put your faith in and who not too. There is a chance I might get to meet the 2 people involved, as they are going to be manning a stall in Berlin square, for the World Cup. I’m heading there very soon. I’m sure he’ll be surprised, if I show up and ask him about Kerobokan jail.
