Canggu Club: Private members club Bali

logo.gifCanggu is trying to become the next big ‘bule’ district in Bali. Anyone who has been out there can’t avoid noticing the villas, some already built, others being constructed.

Canggu has some things going for it which include:
•Its on the beach
•There’s surf
•Its a village environment
•Rice field views (dissappearing fast)
•Close enough to Kuta if you have to work there

The negatives include:
•Beach is kind of windswept
•A sewer outlet at the main surf break
•There’s not a whole lot to do out there
•If you want to go out to Seminyak, you have to travel for 20 minutes
•With more ‘bules’ arriving all the time, you’ll be looking at them rather than rice field views.

One of the big events in Canggu, and one that is likely to push up the value of the land, is the arrival of the Canggu Club. Located at the end of Pantai Berawa, this place is designed for expats with a bit of cash to spare. They are cagey about the actual costs, but a 20 year membership will be $2,000, plus annual fees.

Ika and I rode past on Sunday, by mistake. People were there checking it out, and I’m sure they’ll make money. Latest news about the Canggu club is a soccer tournament celebrating World Cup 2006. Organizers are hoping to form 32 teams, representing the 32 nations in the World Cup. They will play the same games as the real teams. Those interested contact academy@cangguclub.com
