Visiting a mountain temple in Bali
Visiting a temple is something many people like to do during a visit to Bali. The largest temple in Bali is Pura Besakih, in east Bali. Problem with it is that unless you go with locals, you’ll get some harassment from touts. In my opinion the next best mountain temple, for sheer size, is Pura Ulun Danau Batur, perched on the main road overlooking Lake Batur.
I visited Pura Ulun Danau Batur with Barrie last year and enjoyed checking out the temple without any hassles. Pura Ulun Danau Batur is impressive and is one of the most important in Bali, because of its connection with Lake Batur. Originally situated on the shore of Lake Batur, the temple was moved, brick by brick, to it present location, after a volcanic explosion in 1926.
Pura Ulun Danau Batur is dedicated to the Goddess Ida Betawi Dewi Ulun Danau, who provides water for the eastern part of Bali. Pura Ulun Danau Batur is located on the crater rim road, between Penelokan and Kintamani.
