Trip to Batukaru Bali
Ika, Jevon and I are about to take a 1 day overnight trip Gunung Batukaru in Tabanan. Gunung Batukaru is the second highest mountain in Bali (2,271m) and sits in the last true section of jungle on the island. The scenery is stunning and up till now there has not been much development.
In the last couple of years I have made 3 trips up to the Eco Lodge in Sarinbauna, the last time almost breaking my leg falling off a local’s porch into pitch darkness. A good friend of mine, musician Richard Kaal from Australia, is setting up music tours and retreats and also has built a recording studio there. There is a trail leading to the top of Batukaru, although its tree covered. An overnight camping trip would be required, but I don’t have time on this trip. Will be nice for Jevon and Ika to experience cooler weather. The elevation means even in the humid wet season you need a sweater at night.
From Seminyak the drive is 90 minutes, taking the Gadungan turn off to the west of Tabanan city. The Eco Lodge run by Norm and Linda Vant Hoff is situated close to Richard’s place. The location is great and lies between Pupuan and Wongayagede on the southern slopes of the mountain. I plan to get directions and co ordinates for hiking purposes as well as the latest update on how the Balinese music tours / retreats are coming along.
