TJ’s Mexican Bar & Restaurant: Kuta

The ever popular TJ’s Mexican Restaurant in Kuta has been around for quite a while and is probably the best restaurant serving Mexican food in Bali. TJ’s has a delightful open air garden setting and the décor is traditional Mexican. There is a fabulous bar where you can sit and have a drink or relax on the many lounge settings.

Candika had never tried Mexican food and was interested to taste the delights of a cuisine other than Indonesian food. TJ’s is one of those places where you instantly feel relaxed and it was an ideal place to meet some friends after returning from Lombok.

The menu is extensive and with so much to choose from, Candika left the ordering up to me. Nacho’s (Rp25,000) was the best appetiser. A large portion of crispy corn chips with refried beans and melted cheese. I decided on a few dishes for the main meal rather than just having one particular dish. This way you get to taste the various delights on offer. Our friends agreed and it wasn’t long before the delicious spread was placed before us.

My favourite, Enchiladas (Rp45,000) was mouth-watering and I ordered chicken as the filler. Soft flour tortillas grilled with tomato, onions, taco sauce and cheese accompanied by refried beans and Mexican rice. The large portion was ample for four people.

Of course we had to have Fajita’s (Rp55,000). Strips of marinated beef grilled with peppers and onions. The idea of ordering this was so everybody could roll their own in the soft tortillas provided. The accompanying dish of tomatoes, chillis, onions and Mexican sauces was superb.

I then ordered the Moroccan Fish Tagine (Rp45,000) much to Candika’s delight. This is a delicate fillet of Mahi Mahi served with a tagine of almonds, hazelnuts, pine nuts, aubergine, mushrooms and yoghurt wrapped in a soft flour tortilla and served on a bed of rucola.

The servings were more than ample and everyone was delightfully happy and wanting more although our stomachs declined. We finished the meal with a nice Bali Coffee and enjoyed the pleasant atmosphere of TJ’s.

If you are looking for a place to have a romantic meal at a good price or just meet friends, then TJ’s on Poppies Lane 1 in Kuta is the place to go. Highly recommended.
