Suharto on his last legs: Protestors in Jakarta
Former Indonesian President Suharto is on his last legs in Jakarta. The other day current President SBY paid him a visit in hospital. Some say let him be in his old age. Others want him put on trial for 3 decades of debateable undertakings.
In Jakarta on Sunday, 200 protesters demanded Suharto be put on trial, to answer charges that his regime was responsible for mass murder and corruption. The issue splits Indonesians, many of whom remember the Suharto era as one of stability. As Ika says “The terrorists (JI), they have no dare, to do bad things when he is President.”
SBY, while not a lackey, is close to Suharto, but has so far remained impartial. In all likelihood it won’t matter whether he goes on trial or not, because his time is nearing its end. Like him or not, Suharto had a massive impact on Indonesia and SE Asia.
