Sawo: An Indonesian fruit
Once in a while I get surprised by a local delicacy that for some reason I have not seen before. A while back it was the wani, the large white fleshy mango that only grows in Bali. Lovely stuff and recommended if you can find it. A recent find is sawo, the small brown fruit that could be mistaken for a kiwi on the outside, but is a chocolate color on the inside. The sawo has a most unique flavor, pleasantly sweet and with an almost bread-like aroma.
Sawo is a favourite with Muslims and a good place to find it is a market area favoured by Javanese. Ika bought a kilo of sawo at the fruit market in Kerobokan for 5,000rp. Easy to cut, about the same density as a kiwi, sawo has the same thin skin and white center which should be tossed away. Other than that you can dive in and I polished off half a dozen in about 10 minutes today.
