Quake Survivors Ill from Donated Food: Yogyakarta, Central Java, Indonesia
It appears that the suffering of being victims of a 6.2 magnitude earthquake was not enough for the people of Yogyakarta. Now reports are coming out of the Bantul region that hundreds of survivors suffered severe stomach pains and dizziness after eating donated food.
Apparenty there were five villages in the Klaten district that were affected by the spoilt food and the police are looking into the situation and looking for a young man who donated rice dishes but as yet he has not been detained. The reports say that over 200 people were taken to hospital and kept in for observation which surprises me considering the hospitals are well and truly overcrowded as is it now.
Rice which has been stored for a long time is subject not only to earth-born viruses but also that of rats and mice. These rodents are famous for carrying diseases.
And to add to the suffering there are further reports from the earthquake area that looters are now pilfering everything the little morons can get their hands on and that includes raiding food warehouses. The earthquake from last week has now claimed the lives of more than 6,200 people with countless wounded as well as a half million people lefty homeless. All these people are now relying heavily on donated food from government sources and NGOs.
However there is light to be seen at the end of the tunnel so to speak as Indonesian earthquake survivors salvaged bricks and planks from the remains of their flattened homes as they began the arduous process of rebuilding, but international relief agencies warned that the emergency phase was far from over.
