Profiles of the Bali Nine
In case you haven’t heard enough about the Bali Nine over the last month, here is a profile of the group.
Points of interest:
Myuran Sukumaran was born in London of Sri Lankan parents. Sukumaran claimed to be suffering from amnesia.
Andrew Chan was born in Enfield, Sydney. Formerly a catering company supervisor, Chan made 3 visits to Bali in 2004.
Renae Lawrence was born in Newcastle NSW, and worked under Chan at a catering company. Admitted to accompanying Chan on trial runs to Bali, but later retracted her statement.
Scott Rush was born in Brisbane. He believed Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen’s offer of a ‘free holiday’ to Bali and then believed Andrew Chan’s threats to kill him and his family.
Martin Stephens was born in Wollongong. A former bartender, his lawyer described him as a ‘human suitcase’.
Michael Czugaj was born in Brisbane. Went on a ‘free holiday’ with buddy Scott Rush and was surprised when the sponsor wanted something in return.
Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen was born in Brisbane. Recruited Rush and Czugaj and used the crafty “As the only and oldest son in the family I was the one who supported my four younger sisters” routine with the judges to try for leniency.
Matthew Norman was born in Sydney. Not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed, claimed he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Si Yi Chen was born in Sydney. Soft spoken he also claimed he was missing his family and in the wrong place at the wrong time.
