Mt. Merapi poised for eruption in Java
According to an Australian professor, Mt. Merapi could be ready for an eruption. Initially authorities were saying the earthquake, south of Yogya, was unrelated to the situation at Mt. Merapi. However, professor Edward Bryant, a geologist specializing in natural hazards at Wollongong University in New South Wales, thinks they are.
Professor Bryant reckons the rising magma underneath Merapi could of caused the earthquake. Mt. Merapi is now 3 times more active than before the earthquake and the lava dome has grown. Said professor Bryant, “It’s no surprise the volcano is becoming more active. This could well be a precursor for a major eruption. I think it will come to a climax.”
