Indonesian President SBY is nominated for Nobel Peace prize

President SBY is nominated for Nobel Peace prize. I know that might sound funny to outsiders, but its true. This year there have been nominations coming in from far and wide (still waiting for mine, anyone in a high place) and the type of nominee varies greatly. It really should go to someone who has made a difference, not just tried to. The list includes former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari, for helping with the Aceh peace deal, Bob Geldorf for arranging the Live 8 benefit concerts and Bono from US, for helping reduce third world debt.

There were some people who definitely didn’t belong there. Colin Powell? U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton? Does this guy even care about people?

SBY probably won’t win and that’s okay. He has been a great stabilizing force in the region though. As a former general he has connections and respect. As the leader of the world’s largest Muslim country, he can help dampen down situations like Cartoongate and other stuff, like E.Timor, Papua, Aceh. SBY is a friend of the west, but has to temper that considering his position. He has also talked to the Iranians about nuclear issues. Weak leadership in this part of the world doesn’t really work. Only today there was an attempted coup in the Philippines, which is now under a state of martial law. Who knows, in a few more yeas SBY might actually deserve the prize if he continues doing good things.
