Indonesian Crimes Act review could save Bali Nine
There’s an old saying, ‘its not over until Milli Vanilli sings’. This is particularly relevant for members of the Bali Nine, heroin smuggling gang who are on death row.
As News.com.au reports, there is a major review going on right now, of the Indonesian Crimes Act. President SBY has yet to make any decisions and probably won’t for a while, but on the table is a mechanism whereby prisoners on death row, could get a review after 10 years in jail. This is great news for some members of the Bali Nine, because it means if the law is passed, they cannot be executed for the 1st 10 year period in jail. After review, prisoners may be able to have their death sentence converted to a lengthy jail term, with the possibility of a prisoner exchange also on the cards.
Nobody likes heroin traffickers, but some of these kids were just young and stupid. Maybe this will give some the chance to see freedom one day.
