Indonesia unlikely to give clemency to Bali Nine
Indonesia is unlikely to give clemency to the Bali Nine, according to Indonesia’s Ambassador to Australia. Teuku Mohammad Hamzah Thayeb said “Australia does not give the death sentence, so I can understand why your Government would ask for clemency,” “But in a country that is just forming itself democratically, we cannot now intervene nor interfere in the judicial process … the judiciary is totally independent.”
Speaking at the Queensland branch of the Australian Institute of International Affairs in Brisbane, Mr Thayeb, was commenting on a few subjects, the Bali Nine being one of them.
Bali Nine members Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran are facing the death penalty, which Australia seeks to avoid.
