Holiday spots make good targets for terror attacks

That is the conclusion some people are coming to, after Al Queda and other loony networks opted to go for ‘soft targets’ a while ago. Actually terrorists have been hitting ‘soft targets’ for years, if you consider the IRA and Hamas. The recent bombing at the Egyptian resort of Dahab, suggests terror planners are going down the line, hitting places they think westerners congregate.

A CNN-IBN article talks about Goa, on the west coast of India, and it’s likelihood of getting attacked. Goa and Bali share many similarities, both have a strong Hindu element in their culture (although the Portuguese introduced Catholicism), both are tropical place with idyllic auras, as well as wonderful backdrops. Both were on the hippy trail in the 60’s and morphed into holiday locations. I spent a month in Goa and thought it was paradise, my room in a local family’s house, only 100 meters from the shore, with chickens and pigs running around under the palm trees.

Given the fact that 1/3 of all India’s tourists go to Goa, and the fact that Al Queda operatives have been caught there, I’d say its on the cards. So what about other places, out of the control of western governments? Full moon party in Thailand / Carnival in Rio / Nairobi nightclub / Turkish beach resort / New Years in Cancun, sheep shearing championships in Auckland, the possibilities are endless.

In the end you just have to do your own thing, and hope the crazies run out of steam.
