Environmental problems muddy the water in Java

The gas well in East Java, that has been leaking boiling hot toxic mud, for the last 4 months is causing all kind of headaches. The latest plans are to divert the mudflow into the ocean.

According to the BBC, 5 million tonnes of toxic mud, has been disgorged since May, swamping villages including factories, schools and rice paddies. Pity the people in West Bali during the wet season, when the tides bring everything from Java our way.

Today President SBY called the area around Porong, a disaster area and planned to relocate the residents, some of whom are getting testy. You’ve got to feel sorry for the people, some of whom know only rice farming on their family’s land. Some may get the chance to relocate to Kalimantan.
