Driving to Tejakula in NE Bali
Exploring Bali is truly one of the pleasures of living here. Ika, Jevon and I were heading to Poincianna Bungalows in Tejakula, on the NE coast of Bali. There are 2 main ways we could of gone.
The first, a direct shot straight up to Singaraja, turning east as soon as we hit the coast, and driving 30km to Tejakula. The second, a fast ride out to East Bali and drive the long way around past Amed up the East Coast. I decided to go a third way, taking smaller streets. The path less trodden can be the best path, and this one was also the shortest in total distance.
We drove from Seminyak in the Suzuki, to Ubung bemo terminal in north Denpasar. From there the road took us north to Sangeh, Petang, Pelaga, Catur an getting us in the Kintamani area. From there we followed signs for Singaraja, going through Bantang and Duasa, taking the narrow ridge-hugging road to Bondalem on the coast. Riding high in the mountains the fog came in and enveloped us. At times I could see about 30ft max and it was trippy because I knew each side of us was a drop off into a separate valley. Life up in the highlands has got to be way different from down at the beach. We saw stray locals walking along barefoot with a blanket wrapped around them, just as Covarrubias described 70 years ago.
