China: Hungry for Indonesian fish
China and Indonesia are working together on a plan to build a fishing facility somewhere in Indonesia. China is like a hungry teenager, gobbling up wood, oil, steel and fish. Indonesia has those resources and selling them off is an easy way to make cash. It reminds me of the Russian factory fishing in the 1970’s and 1980’s. The Grand Banks off of Canada is now out of fish. I have no doubt the people signing the bill couldn’t care less about the environment, or that China will rape and pillage to it heart’s content.
A friend of mine who is diving instructor, often goes to Eastern Indonesia, home to some of the best scuba diving in the world. I said I wanted to get out to Ambon sometime and do some snorkeling / diving. He told me to make sure I go to Biak, which is also great. Biak is on the list of places for the new fishery, so I’d better hurry up, in 10 years there might not be any fish in Biak.
