Bombers Execution Finalised: Indonesia

Do we all dare to dream that the execution of the Bali bombers is finally a reality. Since the initial incident the whole issue has been dragged out through courts with appeals and nothing but bullshit being told.

There are reports that the three Bali bombers on death row could face an Indonesian firing squad before the end of the month as their lawyers debate whether to lodge last minute appeals.

Bali's Denpost newspaper has quoted an unnamed official inside the prosecutors office as saying that time had run out for the men convicted over the 2002 blasts which killed 202 people including 88 Australians at the Sari Club and Paddy's Bar.

The defence lawyers for Imam Samudra, Amrozi bin Nurhasyim, and Ali Ghufron alias Mukhlas, confirmed they had not yet lodged documents for a judicial review as promised in May.

Their lawyers insisting they were not under any time pressure to launch new appeals.

But the prosecution says that the lack of action has cleared the way for the men to receive the death penalty within weeks. "We waited but they have not been lodged" the paper quoted the official as saying.

"It seems that by the end of July - to be exact July 30 - the execution will be done."

The reported timetable could not be officially confirmed.

Indonesian Attorney-General Abdul Rahman Saleh has ordered the three bombers who have ruled out seeking presidential clemency be executed on the remote prison island of Nusakambangan off southern Java, dubbed "Indonesia's Alkatraz".

A spokesman for the attorney-general refused to confirm the execution date saying only that preparations for the firing squad have begun.

The three men are already at Nusakambangan having been moved their last October on security grounds after rioters outside their Denpasar prison demanded their immediate execution.
