Bali Nine member Myuran Sukumaran to face death
Bali Nine member Myuran Sukamaran appeared in Denpasar District court on Tuesday to hear the prosecution’s sentencing demands. The verdict has not been delivered yet but the prosecution are asking for the death penalty, which he’ll probably get.
On Monday Scott Rush, one of the drug ‘mules’, was told prosecutors are asking for life inprisonment for him, if convicted. One of the prosecutors has already said she wanted the death penalty or mule, Renae Lawrence, though the official demand for her hasn’t been read.
Of course Indonesia is aware of the effects of executing young Australians would have, especially young white Australians. Imagine the furor in Australia if someone who looked like Schapelle Corby or Michelle Leslie was executed! Shooting some 40 year old guy who emigrated from Vietnam just doesn’t get people so hot and bothered. That might sound harsh but its the truth.
Neither Andrew Chan or Myuran Sukumaran are white Australians. If you go down to your local pub and ask people what they think about executing both of them, the likely answer will be “Shoot the buggers, who cares.” It will be interesting to see if the prosecutors seek death for anyone else than those 2.
