Bali Nine death sentences could be carried out quickly
Bali Nine ringleaders Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran have been convicted of trafficking drug and sentenced to death. I think its true to say there is no ambiguity in how the court feels about them. It was my understanding that Indonesia has a lengthy appeals process. In the US prisoners have been on death row for a decade. ABC Australia did an interview with a law professor who is an expert on these cases.
Professor Tim Lindsay is the Director of the Asian Law Center at the University of Melbourne, and says the guilty men should waste no time in appealing their sentence. He says a Presidential pardon is not likely and that Australia will not move to ship them both home until all avenues have been explored first.
He reckons that an early execution is possible, by which he meant 2-3 months. That really would be a shocker. I say at least give the Australian government the chance to work out a prisoner transfer. Of course there is one other way out. If Donald Trump is reading this and is feeling generous, now is the time to help out.
