Bali culs Bird Flu ducks
Government health worked have culled hundreds of ducks after some tested positive for bird flu. Bebek betutu (smoked duck) is a popular dish in Bali. I guess orders for that will diminish, for the foreseeable future. Around 400 ducks were tested for bird flu and 16 came up positive.
According to The Age, many birds in Bali have bird flu, but so far only people working directly with the live birds have died. The ducks that were culled recently were imported from Java.
When I ride my motorbike in the rice fields in Bali, I often see a farmer shepherding a huge gaggle of duck across the field. The ducks eat worms and the farmer will supplement those with grain. Its a feeding frenzy with when the grain is put out.
