Australia gives Papuans temporary protection visas
In a potentially explosive move, Australia has given Papuan asylum seekers a 3 year temporary protection visa. The 43 Papuans sailed a boat from Papua to Christmas Island in January, claiming the Indonesian military was carrying out a genocide against locals.
What happened in E.Timor was that elements of the military supported local militias, who took the law into their own hands. Some of this kind of stuff might be happening in Papua on a much smaller scale. Papua, formerly Irian Jaya, was basically annexed in 1969 and has been used for transmigrasi, Jakarta trying to spread Javanese to less populated parts of the country. I met a girl whose parents moved from Java to Papua to become farmers.
