Art Expo Cancelled: Yogyakarta, Central Java, Indonesia

The Yogyakarta Arts Festival is one of the premiere events in Java during the months of June and July. A fine art exhibition and an arts bazaar, originally scheduled as part of the Yogyakarta Art Festival, have been cancelled.

The programs, the fine art exhibition and the bazaar, will be replaced by a charity exhibition. The dates for this charity event are from June 15th to June 25th and will be held at the at Taman Budaya Yogyakarta gallery on Jl. Sriwedani. So, if you are in town then do please go and support these events because it is for a good cause.

There are numerous artists, both national and international, who will be exhibiting and those included are such brilliant artists as Nasirun, Djoko Pekik, Yuswantoro Adi, Entang Wiharso, Edi Sunaryo and Sun Ardi. Many of you might not know these names, but take it from me as a gallery regular these are some of the finest artist in the country. The organizing committee will said it required participating artists to donate 50 percent of the sales of their paintings to victims of the earthquake.

Akin to the Bali Arts Festival, the festival in Yogyakarta is a potpourri of art, dance and drama with many of the art exhibitions held at the Dutch built Fort Vredeburg in the centre of the city. When Yogyakarta gets back on its feet then I suggest if you are contemplating travelling to the ancient city during the middle of any year, then do yourself a favour and check it out. You will definitely not be disappointed.
