A letter from Sumatra: 1993-part X
We got towed to Siberut harbor and later that night Anise started a fight with a Dutch guy. In our eyes he had totally lost face and it was a shame, because the trip was excellent. It does show however that in third World countries, anytime you go on an adventure trip, you really are putting yourself out there.
Siberut island has no rescue service, or coast guard, no hospital and the ferry to the mainland goes once every 3 days. Back in Bukitinggi we decided to go to Lake Meninjau. Mark and I are here with Jerry, Carolyn and David, and plan to go to Nias, one of the northern islands where they rent surfing equipment. We fly to Penang Malaysia on Oct 2nd 2003.’
That was a great trip and for $125 I got my money’s worth. It makes me wish, as always, that I had been even more adventurous. My friend Mark was killed in a rock climbing accident in 1998, but the memories of our travels are still clear in my mind.
