Talking to Hamid: Bali Bomb survivor
Back in 2003 I did many interviews with Balinese locals, who were in the location of the Paddy’s and Sari Club bombings. It was obvious that most were shaken up, and really still in the recovery process. One lady I talked to named Nita, worked in Sixth Sense surf shop, on Poppies II . The night of the Sari Club bombing she and her husband were working. He managed to get his motorbike and they headed to Poppies I intending to get to the beach. She said he felt faint, and when she checked he had a 10 inch gash in his back, 1 inch deep. He went to Sanglah hospital in Denpasar, where he was recovering.
This afternoon I passed Sixth Sense, and stopped in. The lady’s husband, Hamid, was working and told me his story. We laughed as I told him I knew all about him and that he has a massive scar on his back. Hamid is from Java and seems a very nice guy. He doesn’t seem angry or bitter, just wants to get on with his life. We chatted to one of his friends from Java, who lives in Canada. They both are Muslim, and agreed it was good that Amrozi and co. are heading towards their end. Sixth Sense is located next to the tattoo parlor on Poppies II, close to Jl. Legian. They look like they have some decent boards (new).
